DECEMBER 2025

Generational change at ZOELLER: Responsibility in good hands

At the beginning of 2026, the ZOELLER GROUP will take a significant step: after more than two decades at the helm of the company, Thomas Schmitz will hand over the reins to Markus Dautermann.

The change is the result of a long-term succession plan, in which both worked closely together and jointly drove forward important developments within the group. The corporate structures, international orientation, and key technological decisions of recent years bear the hallmarks of this partnership. Now comes the transition to a new phase based on continuity, trust, and a clear strategic direction.

Mr. Schmitz, Mr. Dautermann, you have been working closely together for many years. What has characterized this collaboration?

Thomas Schmitz: Markus has always distinguished himself through his enthusiasm, empathy, and sense of responsibility. He sees challenges as opportunities for which he develops clear solutions and implements them consistently.

Markus Dautermann: Thomas placed his trust in me early on and gave me the freedom to develop my own ideas. This support shaped my development and gave me the courage to take on responsibility.

What milestones were decisive for the development of the ZOELLER GROUP?

Thomas Schmitz: The two-brand strategy, the service orientation in Germany, and the integration of European locations. The harmonization of product families and investments in digitalization and electrification also determined the course.

Markus Dautermann: The industrialization of our Czech plant was another important step. With modern automation, such as our first painting robot, we were able to significantly increase efficiency and quality—a win for the entire group.

The industry is facing major changes. Where do you see opportunities and challenges?

Thomas Schmitz: Digitalization in particular opens up great opportunities – from more efficient processes to new business models. At the same time, the shortage of skilled workers presents us with major challenges. Automation and AI will help us to use resources wisely and remain competitive.

Markus Dautermann: We are already innovation leaders today. The key is to harness technological advances for the benefit of our customers – this will also secure competitive advantages in the future.

Mr. Schmitz, what was particularly important to you in terms of succession?

Thomas Schmitz: Continuity and trust. Stable succession does not happen by chance. Those who bear responsibility must ensure that the company remains successful in the future. Markus knows the company, the people, and the values—he has been playing a decisive role in shaping the company’s course for a long time.

Mr. Dautermann, what distinguishes ZOELLER for you—and what would you like to continue or change?

Markus Dautermann: The service concept is at the heart of our brand. Customers appreciate the availability and reliability of our products—and the fact that we go the extra mile. We will continue to develop this claim with individual service concepts, digitalization, and AI. Tradition and progress go hand in hand at ZOELLER.

What message would you like to give to the employees at the turn of the year?

Thomas Schmitz: The ZOELLER GROUP is excellently positioned in terms of structure, personnel, and strategy – the best prerequisites for a successful future.

Markus Dautermann: Our success is based on committed, competent teams. Even if times are becoming more dynamic, we will master the challenges ahead together.

Finally, Mr. Schmitz, do you have any personal words for your successor?

Thomas Schmitz: Markus, you have everything it takes. Listen carefully, preserve what has proven itself, and make your mark on ZOELLER with your own signature style. I wish you all the best.

The upcoming generational change marks a turning point that is also underpinned by stability. The ZOELLER GROUP is entering the coming years with a clear structure, modern production sites, and a strong international network. Markus Dautermann, who has been involved in shaping the company’s development for many years and is familiar with its strategic direction, is taking over as the new CEO. The foundations for the future course have been laid—now a new phase is beginning in which proven principles will be continued and new impetus will be provided.
